FUR BALLS IN
PUPPIES.
This is generally something which occurs in the long haired breeds. Dams
should have their coats clipped back short prior to whelping. During
nursing, puppies can ingest a certain amount of fur, especially from long
haired dams whom have begun to shed coat.
Many puppies have been lost due to ingesting the fur and being unable to pass
it through the intestines. The fur becomes a firm, ball of matted fur,
and can block the intestines or even stomach and puppies will perish and die.
If a puppy suddenly stops nursing and is looking lethargic, suspect a fur ball
is the cause. You can try giving orally what is given to cats to remove
fur balls and hope that works.
I have had puppies vomit fur balls which could have killed them if this did not
occur. It is a real risk to young puppies, so please clip back your long
hair breeding bitches.
