A MUST READ FOR ALL DOG LOVERS
"YESTERDAY"

Tomorrow, will be different than today, and today…so very different to yesterday.  Looking back, looking at the here and now, and looking into the future…so many signs around us, tell us, there was, and will be changes, none of them good.

When I first started my passion of breeding and exhibition of dogs, I was proud to be acknowledged as a dog breeder/exhibitor.  "Proud"…very proud. I had no reservations about admitting it, showing the world my dogs, not only in the show ring but also right there in my home.  Everyone knew I was a breeder of beautiful purebred show dogs and I was darn "proud" of it!

In the show ring, it was the lady from Cupidtown, in my neighbourhood, I was known as the lady who bred those cute little fluffy dogs or the ones with the pushed in faces.  For twenty five of my twenty seven years pursuing my passion with dogs, I lived together with my family in a suburban house, with an average size backyard, and yes…with close neighbours who knew about my dogs and my passion, but never felt the need to stick their head over the top of the boundary fences to view what went on in my own backyard.

I had up to 20 dogs, all living in harmony with my family and my neighbours, not one complaint…ever!  Back in those days "yesterday" there was no such thing as restrictions on how many dogs or indeed, pets, you could own.  It was your land, it was your right, and it was your own business what you did in the privacy of your own home.  It would not be unusual for any given household to have three or four or more, pet dogs, without question or without having to gain "permission."

To hear a dog barking, was no big deal.  That is what dogs do…they bark!  That is one of the reasons man kind domesticated them so many hundreds of years ago…for their barking, to alert them to oncoming strangers, dangers, predators, and the such.  I would hear a dog barking in the distance while I lay down to sleep at night, and it was a soothing sound.  It made me smile, knowing someone's dog was doing his job, guarding his property.

Walking dogs along the footpaths off leash was common practice.  Somehow, "yesterday" these dogs all seemed to be well mannered and obedient, they listened to their owner when they called "come here."    And parks, well, they were for walking your dog and for children to play, as were beaches and along rivers.

You seldom heard of a dog attacking a child.  On the odd occasion that you might have heard of such an occurrence, it wasn't on the TV or reading it on the front page of the newspaper, it was told to you by Joe from down the road, who also told you, it wouldn't have happened if the child didn't enter the "dog's" back yard without invitation, or because the child was taunting the dog, or simply because the parents were not there to supervise the child!   It wasn't instantly and always, just the dog's fault!  "Yesterday", there was fairness, there was understanding, and there was justice and not instantly one sided fault.

"Today", at least here in Australia, dogs are not allowed to bark.  If they do, the neighbours have the right to report the dog and owner to the municipal council.  Barking is a sin, which can be turned into grief through prosecution and fines, by council.  Your dogs do not have the right to speak and be heard, or you on their behalf.

Your right, to own more than two dogs has been taken away from you. "Today" you need to be granted permission from the councils to keep more than two "PETS" on your own property.  For breeders especially, this means they must move to the isolation of a country area, where there is plenty of space between themselves and their neighbours, and lots of trees around their property to minimise dog noise! Even then, you still need permission to keep more than two dogs!  It's not like it was "yesterday" you are forced far away.

Not all parks, beaches, or riversides allow you to walk your dog; that is only allowed in what are termed as "dog friendly" parks, beaches, etc.  And you are NOT allowed to walk your dog anywhere off leash!

Being a dog "breeder" is nothing to be proud of.  Oh, no….dog breeders are all evil people who make loads of money from breeding dogs and adding even more to the over population of unwanted dogs that are euthanized every year!  It is a shame, shame, shame…if you dare to breed dogs.  Dog breeders are uncaring people, they do not look after their dogs, they just breed them like breeding machines, and churn out litter after litter, steal them away from their mothers when the puppies are too young, and sell them without any thought or care of who ends up buying them!  Dog breeders, keep their dogs locked up in cages day and night, feed them scraps, never give them veterinary attention, and if they get sick, they shoot them or bludger them to death!   Not how dog breeders were looked upon "yesterday", in fact, a far cry from yesterday.

Now, I will set a few things straight here, and not because I am a dog breeder and have been for most of my life, although, this would certainly qualify me to have an informed opinion of the truth.  The truth is this….all this anti-dog breeder attitude which has been spread amongst the uninformed public, politicians whom in turn pass draconian legislation making it harder to keep and raise dogs; celebrities whom have an impact on the public,  and the media hype which screams with each and every story of dog attack giving half facts, and in some cases no truth…is all the work of Animal Rights Activists.  NOT to be confused with Animal Welfare!

Animal Rights Activists which will be referred to here on as AR's are dangerous extremists.  They believe that ALL animals should have the same right as humans.  That animals should be admired from a distance and should not be kept as pets, or exhibition or agility, obedience or any competition.   They should not be used for food, or testing, racing or in any form of sport; for that matter….should not be kept, used, or bred, for any reason!  I repeat…the same RIGHTS as humans…admired from a distance…not kept!

Sounds too far fetched?  It will never happen?  How wrong you are!  It is happening all over the world, right under our noses!  AR's are cunning, they are media wise, they are politically informed, they know how to pass legislation by using their extremist and often times extorted lies to manipulate politicians into passing more and more legislation!  All forms of control and closer to their ultimate goal which is the demise of all animal/human interaction.  Don't think for one minute this has not already happened and will continue to happen, as long as we all remain oblivious to the truth!  Need more proof?  Do a Google search on PETA or even just type in Animal Rights Movement.  See what truth you uncover yourself and trust me, it would only be the tip of the iceberg!

AR's can be found everywhere!  In positions of power you would never have imagined.  Political levels, media levels, even in your very own canine club!  They can be found, disguised as working for animal welfare in such organisations as the R.S.P.C.A .  Shocking but true…so, very, very, true.

They have forced dog breeders basically to flee for the hills, to make sure for their own safety, that their dogs are well protected and hidden, because AR's have been known to raid breeder's premises and destroy…yes, destroy…"kill" their precious dogs, claiming they are setting them free!  The frightening thing is, they get away with it!  As the law system is "today" unless you actually catch a person doing wrong, you have no evidence and they are "free" to do it again!

And it is not just breeders to be targeted either.  How many times have you heard about pet dogs mysteriously disappearing from their back yards, or cats for that matter?  How many times have you heard of dogs and cats being poisoned? And in some cases, not just the isolated case, but a series of such murders in clusters in different areas?  Coincidence?  Is the truth just too frightening to acknowledge?  Are you scared?  You ought to be!

Now, let me give you some more truths!  Dog breeders are NOT puppy farmers, like the ones I described above whom keep their dogs in horrendous conditions and treat them like breeding machines!  In fact, caring reputable breeders, would be the first to treat Puppy Farmers as they treat their dogs!  So, please…do not paint all breeders with the same brush, as AR's would like!

Breeding dogs is expensive when done correctly!  A dog breeder's life is one of total dedication to the betterment of the breed.  When you consider veterinary bills, feeding, grooming, etc. and all that is costs and is involved in raising a litter, we do not even break even.  It is a labour of love,  nothing more, nothing less.  We do not have time off, we do not get sick leave, and we do not get annual vacations.  We do get tired, we do end up with bad backs, and we do often see the sun rise having gone without sleep all night while we help a new litter arrive into the world, or when one of our much loved dogs needs special attention.  Don't let anyone else tell you otherwise.

Despite all that has been said, despite the AR's, I am still proud to be a dog breeder!  It is my right to be a dog breeder, it is my passion, my life's dedication, and my freedom of choice!   No one should be allowed to take away my rights! I have the right to keep dogs, to love dogs, to have them as my whole life, if so I choose!  I should own that "RIGHT!"

I am the owner of my dogs, not the guardian as AR's say dog owners should be, and why?  Because I feed, house, and pay for all their medical needs, because without me…left to fend for themselves, they would not survive.  I am their owner, they are my much adored members of my family, BUT, they are also my property!   And as such, no one, especially not AR's can try to force me, or anyone whom chooses to keep dogs, that we do not have that right to own what we want.

We need to be vigilant and be aware of what is really going on, each and every time, yet another legislation is aimed at controlling the breeding, keeping, or selling of dogs is being pushed through Government level.  It's not just the Puppy Farmers they want to stop, it's all Dog breeders!  They use the Puppy Farmers to taint all dog breeders.  It's not just the Pet Shops they want to stop selling puppies, it's every sale of any puppy!  It is our rights they are violating and will continue to do so, until they reach their ultimate goal.  The total elimination of all animal ownership.

What can we do to stop them?  Public awareness is one tool; become more politically aware, especially about proposed legislation in regards to domestic animals.  It is important to understand the implications of legislation in its true form.  Read between the lines, what is it really stating?  Is it just another form of control?  If you feel it is, then approach your local member of Parliament and voice your objections!

Breeders need to be just as mindful as the public and instead of arguing amongst themselves as to what is right or what is wrong, or who is responsible for what, they need to UNITE and fight back!   Don't think for one minute, if you ignore what is happening it will disappear!  Don't think because it does not affect your chosen breed this time…it will be the same next time…your turn will come, rest assured!  All you need to see is the lists of breeds affected in one way or another with regulations, restrictions, and dictatorship!   Fight back, now…don't leave it for tomorrow for it may be too late by then.  Don't expect someone else to do the fighting for you, everyone, each and every one of us, need to make a stand!  And remember, each added rule, each amended regulation; every single new legislation is robbing you more of your freedom to breed, own, exhibit dogs.  Be aware!  Be very aware and believe, not everything is as it appears to be.  "Yesterday" is gone and "tomorrow" can either be what we make it, or what we allow others to make it for us.  The choice is your's, make it wisely.
